Organically Impossible

When I was pregnant, Ben and I had many conversations around organic living and our baby.  I wanted our child to live a 100% organic life and I was very serious about it.  It was all "Our baby's going to do this." and "Our baby's going to eat that." and "Our baby's going to be the healthiest baby in the world!”  I remember a month or so after he was born our pediatrician told us to give him a little pear juice and water to help with some constipation and even though it was organic pear juice I thought I was going to have a heart attack!  I saw him as this pure baby who had never had anything in his body besides breast milk and I literally cried when we gave him the juice.  Shortly after that it was time for his vaccinations.  So you’re telling me these shots are chock-full of formaldehyde?  Say What?!?  Charlie wasn’t the only thing keeping me up at night at that point.

Let me just say this now, it is impossible to live 100% organic.  I wish I would have been a little more realistic about this from the beginning so that at six months when I had to substitute Enfamil for breast milk I wouldn’t have felt like a failure of a mother.  I have a tendency to let things cancel each other out which hinders me from celebrating small success.  I get him out of the tub and lather him up with organic baby lotion (+1) then put his flame repellent soaked Carters zip-up sleeper on where he breaths the fumes all night long (-1) Bla!  I give him organic strawberries for an evening snack (+1) and then let him brush his teeth with toothpaste filled with toxins, carcinogens, and a laundry list of ingredients I can’t even pronounce (-1).  You can imagine my frustrations!

We have not given up hope though!  We are just a little more realistic.  While I know it’s nearly impossible to have all organic clothing, food, diapers, bottles, kitchen wear, toys, toiletries, bedding, furniture, houses, cars etc. we are taking baby steps and doing what we can. We try to feel good and celebrate that we are even aware, willing and able to make these small changes.
